Jorge Lorenzo returned to the top of the podium with a win at the Catalunya MotoGP in Spain over the past weekend. The Yamaha rider got off to a hot start and never looked back, immediately working his way to the front of the pack and hanging on to the lead for the duration of the race. He successfully staved off rival Dani Pedrosa for his third win of the season.

“A perfect day – to be honest, I didn’t expect to win; I knew I had some chance, but not like in Mugello where I was more convinced we could get the victory,” Lorenzo said. “It was really difficult physically as it was the hottest race of the year. I kept pushing 100 percent all race because any mistake would have been a disaster.”

Through the sixth round of the motorsports series, only three riders have emerged as winners: Lorenzo, Pedrosa and Marc Marquez. These three are also tops in the overall standings, with Pedrosa leading Lorenzo by seven points, and rookie Marquez trailing the top two by 23 points.

The next round of MotoGP competition is set for June 28 in the Netherlands.

Heavy rainfall leading up to Sunday’s Parts Unlimited Mountaineer Run GNCC made for slippery track conditions at Round 8 of the AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series. However, despite the difficult terrain conditions, the 1 p.m. afternoon dirt bike race boasted some of the most exciting race action of the 2013 season. Kailub Russell dominated the three-hour competition, capturing his second-straight victory of the season, where he closed the gap to less than ten points behind Charlie Mullins in the National Championship standings. In the XC2 Pro Lites class, defending champion Jason Thomas used his veteran knowledge to best his rookie competition as he secured his first win of the season.

Defending National Champion Paul Whibley battled it out with his AmPro Yamaha teammate Jordan Ashburn right off the start, where the duo went nearly side-by-side through the All Balls Racing XC1 Holeshot line, but Whibley once again went home with the $250 prize. Ashburn wasn’t able to brake for the slick corner, causing the Tennessee native to go down, where he began the race in the back of the pack.

Factory FMF/KTM’s Russell also got hung up in the first two turns, entering the woods in nearly last place. However, Russell immediately began picking off riders on the opening lap. By the end of Lap 1, Russell had passed through the entire XC1 field where he put nearly ten seconds on the second place of FMF/RPM/KTM Team Maxxis rider Rory Mead. Just behind Mead was Whibley, FMF/KTM’s Mullins, Rocky Mountain ATV/MC’s Josh Strang and Shenandoah Honda/USWE-Sports.com’s Thad DuVall, all fighting for an early position up front.

Rocky Mountain ATV/MC’s Josh Strang matched his season-best 2nd place finish – Photo: Ken Hill

As DuVall made his way inside the top five, the West Virginia native experienced mechanical issues that would later send him pushing his bike back to the pits. DuVall’s crew made some adjustments to the bike and he was able to return to the race but the machine ended up giving out once again. After two full laps of competition, DuVall was forced to sit out the remainder of his home state GNCC due to a mechanical issue.

Meanwhile, Mullins made his way into the second place position with Strang and Carolina KTM/RidePG.com’s Chris Bach close in tow. As the race wore on, Mullins began to lose ground on his teammate Russell and on the white flag lap Bach made the pass on Mullins to take over second place. At that point, Strang had dropped back to the fourth place position but less than five seconds separated all three riders heading into the final lap of the three-hour race.

Bach ran into some issues getting through lapped riders, giving Strang the opportunity to take over the second place position. Bach’s last lap misfortune arguably cost him the podium position at Round 8 but the Indiana native was able to hold onto fourth place for the day, salvaging championship points.

In a dominant fashion, Russell secured his second straight victory of the season at the Mountaineer Run GNCC, where he now sits just eight points behind Mullins in the overall standings. Strang finished out strong with a second overall, while Mullins held on to take a third place position for the day.

XC2 podium: Grant Baylor, (center) Jason Thomas, Laybe Michael – Photo: Ken Hill

Despite riding through injury again this weekend, Whibley was able to salvage a fifth place finish for the day. Ashburn finished sixth, while Litz Racing Honda’s Takeshi Koikeda came in seventh.

In the XC2 class, it was New Jersey’s Billy Schoeneberg who grabbed his first-ever $100 Digitaloffroad.com Holeshot Award but it didn’t take long for Pennsylvania’s Michael McGinnis to put himself out front. McGinnis led the opening lap before West Virginia native Layne Michael jumped out front on Lap 2.

DirtWise Schools/KTM-Parts.com/Maxxis rider Jason Thomas then took his turn to lead the seven-lap race. From there, Thomas didn’t look back as maintained a one-minute-plus lead throughout the second half of the race.

KTM Support rider Grant Baylor got caught up in a second corner pile up and the young gun was forced to make his way through the pack all afternoon. Baylor eventually caught the rear wheel of F.A.R Husky’s Nick Davis and Morgantown Powersports-backed Layne Michael where he applied the pressure. Davis experienced a mechanical issue after the halfway point that left him out of podium contention and Michael and Baylor were left to battle it out for the second place position.

Congrats to the Top Amateur Indiana’s Zach Love with 14th overall – Photo: Ken Hill

Experience prevailed after three hours of racing as defending champ Jason Thomas captured his first win of the season, closing the gap on the points leader. Baylor’s second place finish allows him to maintain the points lead heading into Round 9 in two weeks, while Thomas sits second in the class standings and Andrew DeLong holds the third place position, despite missing the last two rounds due to injury.

Indiana’s Zach Love captured the 250 A class win, also securing the Top Amateur honors with 14th overall. The next finishing amateur was West Virignia’s very own Anthony Stone in 16th overall.

Factory FMF/KTM rider Kailub Russell took his third win of the season at the eighth round of the GNCC Series while his teammate and current points leader, Charlie Mullins, joined him on the podium with a third place result.

Russell and Mullins both got caught in a first corner pile up at the start of the race. Mullins was able to go around the outside of it avoiding a crash but still found himself at the tail end of the pack while Russell collided with another rider and was further back once he recovered.

Despite the tough start, the two teammates quickly charged forward making multiple passes in the first few miles to move into the five. By the end of the first loop, Russell had moved into the lead while Mullins was sitting in fourth.

It wasn’t long before the teammates were in the top two positions and began to pull away from the pack. On the fourth lap of the race, Mullins suffered a hard crash down a hill, twisting his knee in the process. He collected himself and reentered the race still in second position, but was now dealing with quite a bit of pain in his knee. He pushed as hard as he could to try and hold his position. With a lap to go, he lost one position to Josh Strang.

Charlie Mullins still holds the championship points lead by five points over his teammate – Photo: Harlen Foley

Out front, Russell crossed the checkered flag to take his third victory of the season. Strang followed in second place roughly three minutes back while Mullins was just seconds behind him to round out the podium. Heading to the ninth round, Mullins still holds the championship points lead by five points over his teammate.

The XC2 Pro Lites class was won by Jason Thomas who took the victory over KTM support rider Grant Baylor and local KTM rider Layne Michael. The three KTM riders made it a podium sweep for KTM. Now eight rounds into the series, Baylor holds the points lead by 14 points over Thomas.

Factory FMF/KTM rider Maria Forsberg was very comfortable on the muddy and slick course. She took the win in the women’s class by 6 minutes over fellow KTM rider Kacy Martinez. The two ladies are now tied for the lead in the point standings. Forsberg’s finishing time also placed her second overall in the morning class podium.

KTM Motorsports is excited to announce the Factory FMF/KTM Team riders that been chosen to represent their country at the 2013 International Six Days Enduro (ISDE). Factory riders Kurt Caselli, Mike Brown and Charlie Mullins were selected to represent the U.S. World Trophy Team while Steward Baylor was selected for the Junior Trophy team alongside his younger brother, KTM support rider, Grant Baylor.

The six-member World Trophy Team was announced by the American Motorcyclist Association earlier this week. It includes Caselli, Brown and Mullins as well as Thad Duvall, Zach Osborne and Taylor Robert. The team will face the best off-road racers in the world in Sardinia, Italy on September 30 – October 5, 2013.

Brown, who will be representing the World Trophy Team for the second year in a row, is excited to race aboard the 500 XC-W in the E3 class. “This year I will be riding the bigger bike which I am excited about. It is closer to the bike I actually race in the U.S. so I feel I will adapt easier which should help me run up front throughout the competition.”

The Junior Trophy Team will include both Baylor brothers as well as Andrew Delong and Jesse Groemm. The oldest Baylor brother, Steward, had to sit out last year’s event after he suffered a bad wrist injury. “I am excited that my wrist has finally healed and I will be able to compete at the ISDE this year. It has always been a dream of mine to represent the Junior Trophy Team and I am happy that I can do that this year, and even more happy that my brother will be there as my teammate,” stated Baylor.

Steward Baylor is excited that his wrist has finally healed and he will be able to compete at the ISDE this year.

The U.S. Women’s Cup Team will include Rachel Gutish, Mandi Mastin and Brooke Hodges. All three riders will race aboard KTM motorcycles in Italy.

Factory FMF/KTM Team Manager, Antti Kallonen, will serve as the ISDE Team Manager for the U.S. World, Junior and Women’s Teams. He commented, “We are incredibly excited with the caliber of riders we have selected for this year’s event. We feel we have three strong teams and one of the best chances of standing on the overall podium that we have had in a while. I am also proud of our KTM riders as they have worked very hard to be selected for this honor and it is a great achievement to see so many of our members on the team.”

America’s motorcyclists can help support the U.S. ISDE team, and look good while doing it, by buying an official U.S. ISDE T-Shirt. All proceeds support the effort to transport the riders, bikes and crew to and from Italy. To buy a shirt, and to get more information about the U.S. ISDE effort, visit www.americanmotorcyclist.com/racing/internationalcompetition/isde.

Bike and scooter owners across the U.S. are encouraged to don their riding gear and use their machines as they commute to and from the workplace. To celebrate this effort, Monday, June 17, is the annual Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day.

The day is a chance for motorcyclists around the world to express their solidarity while also demonstrating the advantages of these two-wheeled machines. With the aim of showing how people from all different walks of life participate in motorcycling, as well as how riding the bikes can reduce congestion on the roads, the celebration is set to shed some positive light on the activity.

“Motorcyclists know that motorcycles are fun to ride as well as an economical way to transport yourself from one point to another, and Ride to Work Day is a great way for us to demonstrate that to other road users en masse,” said Rob Dingman, AMA president. “AMA members ride responsibly and, with the summer riding season upon us, it’s a good time exercise safe riding practices and to urge that other motorists be aware of motorcyclists on our roads and highways.”

Motorsports fans who aren’t able to participate in Ride to Work Day can still take part in a few similar activities, as the nonprofit organization that plans the day hosts several other events throughout the year.

The National Defense Authorization Act, which includes language to create the Johnson Valley National Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area in California to protect it from a military takeover, has cleared the U.S. House, the American Motorcyclist Association reports.

On June 14, the House approved the authorization bill, H.R. 1960. The measure now goes to the Senate for further consideration.

The legislation includes language written by Rep. Paul Cook (R-Calif.) to protect Johnson Valley from a takeover by the U.S. Navy that would virtually end riding there. The Navy wants to expand the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms into the 189,000-acre Johnson Valley area, which is a long-standing and popular area that is across the San Bernardino Mountains from Los Angeles.

“This legislation has cleared an important hurdle,” Cook said when the proposal cleared a House committee earlier. “Support for it was overwhelmingly bipartisan. My concern has always been about public safety. The Johnson Valley is one of the few places left for off-highway vehicle recreation. This is a balanced approach which protects public safety while still allowing for recreational use.”

Cook is a member of the House Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs Committees. He served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. During his time in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.

Several years ago, the U.S. Department of the Navy began the formal process to take over some 365,906 acres of public land near San Bernardino to use for live-fire training for the Marines.

Cook’s proposal would designate Johnson Valley OHV as the Johnson Valley National OHV Recreation Area. The area would be designated specifically for recreational uses, including, but not limited to, OHV use, camping and hiking. Marine Corps activities would be allowed twice a year and couldn’t include any explosives that could be left behind.

The American Motorcyclist Association is pleased to announce the U.S. riders who will contest the 88th International Six Days Enduro. Led by the World Trophy Team of Mike Brown, Kurt Caselli, Thad Duvall, Charlie Mullins, Zach Osborne and Taylor Robert, a contingent of 31 U.S. riders will face the best off-road racers in the world in Sardinia, Italy, Sept. 30-Oct. 5.

“We are honored to once again contest the ISDE and chase the American dream of winning this prestigious event,” said AMA Off-Road Manager Chuck Weir. “We are excited about our entire team for 2013, not just the World Trophy Team but all the American riders. We fully expect to achieve our goal of a team world championship at the ISDE this September.”

Antti Kallonen, who guides KTM’s off-road racing teams in North American competition, manages the U.S. ISDE team.

“We made great progress last year with our ISDE program, and I’m happy to see that we have been able to build an even better team and program for this year,” Kallonen said. “Our Trophy team is as good as it can be, and all team riders are already hard at work to make sure we are 100 percent prepared.”

Mike Brown, an ISDE veteran, will be a key member of the World Trophy Team.

“It’s fulfilling that our efforts have caught motocross riders’ and teams’ attention,” he added. “There are a bunch of great off-road riders in the motocross world, and I’m glad to have Zach Osborne teaming up in the Trophy Team alongside our solid off-road riders.”

Caselli, from Palmdale, Calif., will captain the World Trophy Team. He will race a KTM in Italy. Brown, from Bluff City, Tenn., and Mullins, from Hickory, N.C., will also be on KTMs. Osborne, from Abingdon, Va., and Duvall, from Williamstown, W.Va., will race Hondas. Robert, from Scottsdale, Ariz., will ride a Kawasaki.

“It’s great to be on the AMA’s World Trophy Team again for this years’ ISDE in Sardinia,” Caselli said. “We’re bringing the best off-road riders that the United States has to offer with a great chance of winning the World Trophy.”

Like ISDE veteran Brown, who won the 2001 125cc AMA National Motocross Championship before his career shifted to off-road racing, Osborne’s roots are in motocross. However, the 23-year-old — a newcomer to the ISDE — has been branching into off-road recently and says he is ready for the competition at the ISDE.

Steward Baylor will ride with his brother on the U.S. Junior Trophy Team – Photo: Shan Moore

“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” Osborne said. “I know it will be a challenge for me, but I’m working hard to be prepared and do my best for the team. I have to give a big thanks to everyone involved in picking me, and also my team for supporting me and giving me a bike to race.”

The World Trophy Team is one of three premier teams that represent the United States at the ISDE. The others are the Junior Trophy Team, which fields four riders younger than 23 years old, and the Women’s Trophy Team, which fields three female riders. In addition, several club team members represent the United States at the event.

The U.S. Junior Trophy Team will include Grant Baylor from Belton, S.C.; Steward Baylor from Belton, S.C.; Andrew DeLong from Morgantown, Pa.; and Jesse Groemm from Forked River, N.J. Grant and Steward Baylor are brothers, and both will ride KTMs. DeLong will ride a Husqvarna, and Groemm will compete on a Yamaha.

The U.S. Women’s Cup Team will include Rachel Gutish from Terre Haute, Ind.; Mandi Mastin from Whitehouse, Ohio; and Brooke Hodges from San Martin, Calif. All three Women’s Cup Team riders will field KTMs in Italy.

The U.S. ISDE team has also designated a Senior Club Team of veterans from the club team members. This year, the Senior Club Team will include Team JAFMAR riders Scott Bright from Platteville, Colo.; Jeff Fredette from Beecher, Ill.; and Brian T. Storrie from Denton, Texas.

The Wellard Team will represent one of the strongest club teams this year. It will include national-caliber riders Nick Fahringer from Dayton, Ohio, on a Husaberg; Jimmy Jarrett from Salem, Ohio, on a Kawasaki; and Ryan Sipes, from Flaherty, Ky., on a Suzuki.

Other teams include team GoFasters.com (Johnny Barner, Ian Blythe and Alex Dorsey); AMA District 37 (Sam Buffa, Trevor Kline and Ryan Kudla); team Tony Agonis (Keith Curtis, Fred Hoess and Josh Knight); and Dewitt Powersports (Jeff O’Leary, Shawn O’Leary and Cory Pincock).

Riders at the ISDE compete in one of three displacement classes: the E1 class, which features 100cc to 125cc two-stroke and 175cc to 250cc four-stroke motorcycles; the E2 class, which features 175cc to 250cc two-stroke and 290cc to 450cc four-stroke motorcycles; and the E3 class, which features 290cc to 500cc two-stroke and 475cc to 650cc four-stroke motorcycles.

2013 ISDE Team Sponsors

In addition to riders’ individual manufacturer and product sponsors, direct team sponsors include Wellard, Arai, Worldwide Material Handling Products, Spectro, Motion Pro, Radiant Global Logistics and Moose Racing.

America’s motorcyclists can help support the U.S. ISDE team, and look good while doing it, by purchasing an official U.S. ISDE T-Shirt. As Harley-Davidson‘s highly anticipated 110th anniversary celebration inches closer, more details about the festivities are coming to light. The latest announcement centers on new involvement from Dunlop Tires, as the company will be the official tire sponsor of the events taking place this summer.

The cruiser tire manufacturer is also recognizing its own milestone this year, as 2013 is the 125th anniversary of the start of its tire production. Motorcycle fans attending anniversary events in Rome, Italy; Sturgis, South Dakota; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin will be able to enjoy additions from Dunlop at the festivals.

Still, the iconic motorcycle brand will be taking center stage. The main events surrounding Harley-Davidson’s 110th anniversary include concerts, rallies, UFC fights and much more. During the events, motorcyclists and guests will be able to talk to Dunlop staff members about how to select the best possible tire and achieve top performance.

“This opportunity to celebrate our 125th anniversary concurrently with Harley-Davidson affords Dunlop the chance to reinforce the importance of tire care and maintenance with Harley-Davidson riders, while we also share information about how to select the proper tire and get the most out of Dunlop tires on Harley-Davidson motorcycles during these gatherings,” said Mike Buckley, a Dunlop vice president.

The 22nd annual Ride To Work demonstration can more than triple the number of riders on some roads. Most motorcycle and scooter clubs and organizations encourage riders to commute by scooter or motorcycle on this day. Riders seek employer recognition and support for this form of transportation and increased public and government awareness of the societal positive benefits of utility riding.

Adding motorcycles and scooters helps traffic flow better, according to Ride to Work, a non-profit advocacy organization. Studies have also shown that across the same distances, riders reach their destinations up to 20% faster than those using automobiles. Most motorcycles and scooters also consume less resources per mile than automobiles. “Riding to work on this day is fun and highlights value of motorcycling. Riding is a form of personal mobility that saves energy, helps the environment and provides a broad range of public benefits,” stated Andy Goldfine, this year’s event organizer.
